das tomas schmit archiv freut sich, unterstützt von mitgliedern des schneckentreffen e.v., seit januar 2015 an einem werkverzeichnis zu arbeiten. dieses werkverzeichnis wird das künstlerische werk von tomas schmit erstmals vollständig erfassen und dokumentieren, angefangen bei seinen partituren, büchern und zeichnungen über seine editionen und quagga-hefte bis hin zu seinen lesungen, seinen zwei cds und der dvd.

unser werkverzeichnis ist in erster linie als online-datenbank gedacht, mit zugang für alle, die sich für das leben und werk von tomas schmit interessieren, und in zweiter linie als digitales, verzweigtes archiv, über das nutzer mit spezialinteressen nach vorheriger anmeldung werke und andere materialien von tomas schmit für ausstellungen, publikationen und forschungszwecke auswählen können. eine buchveröffentlichung ist geplant.

das wichtigste arbeitsmaterial sind für uns die vier kataloge von tomas schmit, 1978, 1987, 1997 und 2007 (posthum) von ihm selbst geschrieben, sowie die onlineversion dieser kataloge, von 2009 bis 2010. 

beide quellen führen übereinstimmend die 653 werke auf, die tomas schmit mit werknummern versehen hat. sie nennen die titel und entstehungsdaten dieser werke und umfassen auch technische angaben sowie weiterführende texte, die einblicke in das denken und arbeitsprinzip von tomas schmit geben. sie ermöglichen, alle bekannten werke relativ schnell zu erfassen, querverbindungen zwischen einzelnen werken sowie zwischen dem gesamtwerk von tomas schmit und dem werk anderer künstler zu sehen, wie z.b. george brecht, stanley brouwn, robert filliou, ludwig gosewitz, dorothy iannone, dick higgins und alison knowles, arthur köpcke, george maciunas, nam june paik, dieter roth und emmett williams, mit denen er zusammengearbeitet hat und in vielen fällen auch befreundet war.  

namensregister, alphabetische titellisten, biographische notizen, listen der gruppenaufführungen, soloaktionen, lesungen, einzel- und gruppenausstellungen sowie bibliographien der solopublikationen und beiträge zu wichtigeren veröffentlichungen von tomas schmit sind eine weitere wichtige arbeitsgrundlage. sie können dabei helfen, noch nicht erfasste werke zu authentifizieren.

herausgeberin des werkverzeichnisses ist barbara wien, galeristin, verlegerin und publizistin; beauftragt mit der erstellung und den dafür notwenigen recherchen ist berit schuck, literaturwissenschaftlerin und seit 2022 verantwortlich für das tomas schmit archiv.

the tomas schmit archive, supported by members of the slugs meeting society, is pleased to have been working on a catalogue raisonné since january 2025. this catalogue raisonné will fully capture and document tomas schmit’s artistic oeuvre for the first time – from his scores, books and drawings to his editions and quagga booklets, as well as his readings, his two cds and the dvd.

our catalogue raisonné is primarily intended as an online database, accessible to anyone interested in the life and work of tomas schmit, and secondarily as a digital, interconnected archive. after prior registration, users with specific interests may request works and other materials by tomas schmit for exhibitions, publications and research purposes. a book publication is also planned.

our key source materials are the four catalogues by tomas schmit himself – published in 1978, 1987, 1997 and 2007 (posthumously) – as well as the online version of these catalogues. 

both the printed catalogues and their online version list the same 653 works to which tomas schmit assigned work numbers. they provide titles and dates of creation, as well as technical details and additional texts that offer insights into tomas schmit’s thinking and working methods. they give a quick overview of all known works and make it possible to see connections between individual works, as well as between tomas schmit’s complete oeuvre and the work of other artists he collaborated with or was friends with, including george brecht, stanley brouwn, robert filliou, ludwig gosewitz, dorothy iannone, dick higgins, alison knowles, arthur köpcke, george maciunas, nam june paik, dieter roth and emmett williams.

name indexes, alphabetical title lists, biographical notes, lists of group performances, solo actions, readings, solo and group exhibitions, as well as bibliographies of tomas schmit’s solo publications and contributions to major publications, constitute further important source material. they can also help to authenticate works that have not yet been recorded.

for our catalogue raisonné, we will compile all available inventory information, add previously unrecorded works if we can authenticate them and arrange tomas schmit’s works both chronologically and thematically. we will endeavour to locate the current owners and locations of works and, finally, collect or commission high-resolution colour images of all works.

the catalogue raisonné will be edited by barbara wien, gallerist, publisher and writer. berit schuck, a literary scholar responsible for the tomas schmit archive since 2022, is in charge of its preparation and the necessary research.
